Dental Implant
Explained

What Exactly Is
Dental Implant?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement crown or bridge. Dental implants are an excellent option for people in good general oral health who have lost either one or multiple teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or for some other reason such as tooth decay or disease. While high-tech in nature, dental implants are actually more tooth “friendly” than traditional bridgework, since implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support. This means that important tooth structure doesn’t have to be removed to allow a bridge to be placed.

Dental implants look and feel so natural that you may forget you ever lost a tooth. It not only improves aesthetics but also more importantly restores function so that you can eat properly. We all know that our confidence about our teeth and our smile affects how we feel about ourselves, both personally and professionally. With experienced Specialists like Dr. Kashif Naqvi and Dr. Farhan Khan at Smile Savers, you no longer will have to hide your smile due to missing teeth.

Implants are made of titanium, which is lightweight, strong and bio compatible, which means that the body does not reject it. Titanium and titanium alloys are the most widely used metals in both dental and other bone implants, such as orthopedic joint replacements. Dental implants have the highest success rate of any implanted surgical device.

Dental implants are also very durable. When the implant and the restoration on it are placed correctly, and the patient does his/her part in proper home-care and follow-up maintenance visits with our doctors, implants can often last a lifetime. Long-term studies continue to show improving success rates for implants.

What Do Implant Do?

1. Replace one or more teeth without affecting adjacent teeth.

2. Support a porcelain bridge and eliminate the need for a removable partial denture.

3. Provide support for a denture, making it more secure and comfortable.

Types of Dental Implants.

1. Endosteal (in the bone):  This is the most commonly used type of implant. The various types include screws, cylinders or blades surgically placed into the jawbone. Each implant holds one or more prosthetic teeth. This type of implant is generally used as an alternative for patients with bridges or removable dentures.

2. Subperiosteal (on the bone):These are placed on top of the jaw with the metal framework's posts protruding through the gum to hold the prosthesis. These types of implants are used for patients who are unable to wear conventional dentures and who have minimal bone height.
